Filmmaker Philip Gröning obtained permission to shoot at the Grande Chartreuse, a monastery in the French Alps, and recorded the life of the Carthusian monks there. Without interviews or narration, the film consists of images, sounds of the convent and the monks' chants, showing the order's prayer, work and silence.
