As World War II nears its end, the social order in Germany collapses. Private Willi Herold, fleeing his platoon, finds a captain's uniform and decides to impersonate a high-ranking officer on a secret mission entrusted by the Führer himself. This impersonation leads him to experience both the pleasures and horrors of his new persona, forming a group of lost soldiers under his command and sowing terror among the innocent population. The film is a journey into moral degradation, Nazi messianism, perversion, and barbarism.
