Frank is a literature professor, cynical and devoted to whiskey. Rita is a hairdresser, a bit awkward, but with a desperate thirst for knowledge, and it is Frank who is supposed to teach her. But Frank - at first half-horrified, half-arrogantly amused - soon realizes that Rita has much more common sense than the "educated citizens" he lives with. He begins to love Rita for her zest for life and her simple, natural views. But Rita's life changes with her new environment... Two worlds collide and combine into an endearing human comedy.
