Based on Nathanael West's novel about the decadence of Hollywood in the late 1930s, this film is a brilliant and visually striking look at a world of platinum blondes, glamour, and broken dreams. Directed by John Schlesinger, it builds a sense of sexual and physical danger that culminates in a shocking climax.
