«All That Heaven Allows» is the 1955 Douglas Sirk film, starring Jane Wyman, Rock Hudson and Agnes Moorehead, on DVD from The Criterion Collection.
Cary Scott, a well-to-do middle-aged widow, begins a relationship with Ron Kirby, her gardener, a younger and simpler man. The romance stirs gossip in the small community where she lives and the disapproval of her children, who see her drifting from the social conventions of 1950s America. Sirk portrays with formal elegance the conflict between personal happiness and the expectations of a conservative society, turning colour and mise-en-scène into a reflection of the characters' inner drama.
The Criterion Collection DVD edition, with a running time of 89 minutes, colour image and 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Region 1.
For cinephiles interested in classic Hollywood melodrama and the work of Douglas Sirk, one of the genre's peaks and a benchmark of 1950s cinema.
