Ulysses appeared in Paris in 1922 thanks to the bookseller Sylvia Beach; the book was banned in the United Kingdom and the United States for more than a decade.
The whole action of Ulysses takes place in Dublin on 16 June 1904, celebrated worldwide ever since as 'Bloomsday'.
He spent most of his life in self-imposed exile, mainly in Trieste, Paris and Zurich.
He suffered severe eye problems and was nearly blind in his last years; parts of his books were written by dictation.
He died in Zurich in 1941 from complications after surgery for a perforated ulcer.
