He was born in Calw into a Protestant missionary family in which Indian culture had a strong presence.
He travelled to India in 1911, a journey that shaped much of Siddhartha (1922).
He took Swiss citizenship in 1923 and spent his final years in Montagnola, in the Ticino.
He received the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature for a body of work inspired by humanism and psychoanalysis.
He distanced himself from Nazi Germany, and his works were censored by the regime from the 1930s onwards.
