Sherlock Holmes was modelled on his medical professor Joseph Bell, famous for his sharp clinical observation.
He 'killed' Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls in 1893 but had to bring him back due to public outcry.
He also wrote historical novels such as The White Company and science fiction such as The Lost World.
He publicly defended the existence of fairies and spiritualism, especially after the First World War.
He was knighted in 1902 by King Edward VII for his services during the Boer War.
