He was the grandson of a Haitian slave and a French marquis, and his father was one of the first black generals in Napoleon's army.
He worked with a team of collaborators, most notably Auguste Maquet, to produce his enormous body of work.
He wrote more than 250 works, including novels, plays, short stories and travel books.
He died penniless in 1870 and his remains were transferred to the Panthéon in Paris in 2002.
Many of his heroes, such as d'Artagnan and Edmond Dantès, are loosely based on real historical figures.
