«Une promesse» is the novel by Sorj Chalandon, published by Grasset in paperback (273 pages, in French).
In Mayenne, seven friends take turns caring for the closed house of Étienne and Fauvette, an elderly couple: one brings flowers, another turns on the lights, another recites poems, and another winds an old clock. They keep a childhood promise to cheat death, until time and weariness test their brotherhood.
