Este libro contiene dos obras de teatro de Rosario de Acuña: 'Rienzi el tribuno' y 'El padre Juan'. 'El padre Juan' es una obra que promueve el librepensamiento, pero Acuña tuvo dificultades para encontrar un empresario dispuesto a estrenarla en Madrid. Decidió formar su propia compañía, ensayando, dirigiendo y diseñando el vestuario. Alquiló el teatro de la Alhambra y estrenó la obra el 3 de abril de 1891. A pesar del apoyo del público, el tema controvertido provocó un escándalo y se prohibieron las representaciones. La edición impresa se agotó rápidamente, lo que llevó a una segunda edición con algunas expresiones suavizadas.
