«Professional Software Development» is Steve McConnell's essay on software engineering (Addison-Wesley Professional, paperback, 272 pp., English).
It analyses programming as a current craft and software engineering as a profession in the process of maturing. It examines industry myths, obsolete practices such as «cargo cult software development» and the return on investment in better methods, and advocates professionalisation and solid careers for programmers.
Published in 2003, its subtitle is «Shorter Schedules, Higher Quality Products, More Successful Projects, Enhanced Careers». It expands on the author's earlier work «After the Gold Rush».
For computer science students and programmers who want to understand the evolution of their craft and the future of software engineering.
