«Pilate: The Diary of an Invented Man» is Ann Wroe's historical biography, published by Vintage in paperback (414 pages, in English).
Pontius Pilate, the man who crucified Christ, is almost unknown in classical sources; every age has imagined him in its own way. Ann Wroe surveys these invented Pilates —medieval tyrant, Coptic saint, modern pragmatist— and, with archaeology and ancient texts, reconstructs the possible historical Pilate and his struggle between destiny and free will.
The work was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for non-fiction in 1999 and the Vintage paperback edition was published in March 2000.
For readers of ancient history, biography and early Christianity seeking a documented approach to a little-known biblical figure.
