«Lujo y capitalismo» is the essay by Werner Sombart published by Alianza Editorial in paperback (192 pages, in Spanish).
Starting from the changes that European society underwent since the Crusades, Sombart analyses how the taste for luxury reshaped the customs of the ruling classes and favoured the formation of the bourgeoisie. The demand for luxury goods drove the development of capitalism and the monetary economy, while also transforming social values.
The work was originally published in 1912 under the title «Luxus und Kapitalismus». It forms part of the series «Studien zur Entwicklungsgeschichte des modernen Kapitalismus», as the first volume.
A classic essay on economic thought, suitable for readers interested in economic history, historical sociology and social philosophy.
