«Las órdenes militares castellanas en la Edad Moderna» is a historical essay by José Ignacio Ruiz Rodríguez (Arco Libros, paperback, 80 pages).
The book studies the role of the orders of Santiago, Calatrava and Alcántara in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the medieval world that gave rise to them gives way to the great dynastic states. It analyses their adaptation to this new reality and how the defence of the faith becomes a code of honour linked to lineage and blood purity.
Volume 85 of the Cuadernos de historia collection. First edition, published in 2001. Includes bibliography.
Suitable for history students and readers wishing to delve into the institutions of early modern Spain.
