«La señorita de Tacna ; Kathie y el hipopótamo» is a theatre volume by Mario Vargas Llosa, published by Alfaguara in hardback (282 pages, in Spanish).
The book brings together two plays that revolve around the relationship between life and fiction. In «La señorita de Tacna», a writer reconstructs his grandmother's memory and reflects on the origin of stories, the past and forgetting. In «Kathie y el hipopótamo», fiction is shown to be fuelled by the desires and failures of those who create it.

Vargas Llosa was one of the most significant Latin American novelists and essayists and one of the leading writers of his generation. Some critics consider him to have had a more substantial international impact and worldwide audience than any other writer of the Latin American Boom.
