This book offers an overview of the theater performed in Catalonia over ten centuries, from the Middle Ages to the present. It combines two study methods: one that analyzes the dramaturgy and theatricality of the shows, and another that focuses on dramatic literature. The book does not propose a division between ancient and modern theater, but draws three chronological phases in the history of theater in Catalonia: a period of non-literary theatricality until the 16th century, the professionalization of an Italian-style theater in Spanish until the mid-19th century, and the last one hundred and fifty years, when Catalan is recovered without abandoning Spanish and street performances return.
