«Histoire du théâtre» is the historical essay by Alain Viala, published by Presses universitaires de France in paperback (127 pages, in French).
It traces the history of theatre from its Greco-Roman origins to the most current forms and analyses its place in society. Against the common idea that we all know what theatre is, it shows a complex reality: multiple types of works, stagings, performance spaces, actors and theatrical practices.
First edition (2005), part of the Que sais-je? collection (no. 160). Includes bibliography on page 124.
Intended for students and theatre enthusiasts who want a clear and brief introduction to the history of the stage.
