«Fille de la campagne» is Edna O'Brien's memoir, published by Sabine Wespieser Éditeur in paperback (478 pages, in French).
Written at the end of her life, these memoirs trace Edna O'Brien's trajectory: her solitary childhood in County Clare, her religious education, her arrival in 1960s London, and the scandal provoked by her first novel. The author combines portraits of her circle (Paul McCartney, Sean Connery, Robert Mitchum) with the struggle for her personal and creative independence, and with the family shadows that fed her work. Without rancour or self-indulgence, she maintains that nothing mattered as much in her life as the urgency to write.
Work translated from English (Ireland) into French by Pierre-Emmanuel Dauzat. The original title is «Country Girl». The cover of this edition indicates the special Femina prize 2019 for her body of work.
For readers of memoirs and Irish literature who want to discover the life of one of the great writers of the twentieth century.
