«Ética como amor propio» is the philosophical essay by Fernando Savater, published in 1988 by Mondadori in paperback (330 pages, in Spanish).
Savater proposes an ethics founded on self-love and on well-understood personal interest, against the traditional identification of virtue with altruism. The book examines the relationship between individual and society and the cultural meaning of immortality, in dialogue with thinkers of different orientations, from Aristotle to Foucault.
Includes bibliographical references (pp. 315-319) and an index, as well as the unpublished essay «Las virtudes como necesidad y libertad».
A demanding read that requires prior philosophical knowledge; the dialogue with Aristotle, Schopenhauer or Foucault is key.
