«El gran duque de Alba» is the historical biography by Henry Kamen, published by La Esfera de los Libros in hardback (384 pages, in Spanish).
Fernando Álvarez de Toledo (1507-1582), third Duke of Alba, served as a general to Charles V and Philip II for over forty years. Kamen reconstructs his military campaigns and his harsh repression in the Netherlands, which earned him the nickname «el carnicero de Flandes», and contrasts the black legend with his personal correspondence.
The work, subtitled «Soldado de la España imperial», is part of the Historia collection from La Esfera de los Libros; the translation is by Amado Diéguez and includes bibliography and index.
For readers interested in the history of Spain, the Spanish empire of Charles V and Philip II, and the black legend.
