«Bahnwärter Thiel» is the short novel by German writer Gerhart Hauptmann, published by Reclam Philipp Jun. in paperback (53 pages, in German).
A work of German Naturalism, it tells the life of Thiel, a level-crossing keeper devoted to his job. After being widowed, he remarries to ensure care for his son; the new cohabitation and the tension between the tracks and the home gradually break his inner balance. Hauptmann thus reflects the pressure of industrialisation on the individual.
Subtitled «Novellistische Studie», it was originally published in 1888. It is part of Reclams Universal-Bibliothek (no. 6617), in an edition with an editorial note and epilogue by Fritz Martini.
For secondary-school students and readers new to German Naturalism; a common reading in German schools.

Gerhart Johann Robert Hauptmann was a German dramatist and novelist. He is counted among the most important promoters of literary naturalism, though he integrated other styles into his work as well. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912.
