«Annam» is the novel by Christophe Bataille, in paperback (92 pages, in French).
A group of French religious men set sail for eighteenth-century Vietnam and take more than a year to reach Saigon. There they teach the Gospel to the southern peasants, but the French Revolution makes France forget them. The climate and beauty of the country transform them: they live, die, and end up forgetting God.
First published in 1993, the novel won the Prix du premier roman de l'université d'Artois in 1994.
For readers of historical fiction and short narratives about the encounter between the West and Southeast Asia.
Christophe Bataille, born 1971, is a French writer.
