«À défaut de génie» is the memoir work by François Nourissier, published by Gallimard in paperback (880 pages, in French).
The author insists these are not memoirs but a fabric of memories and portraits through which he reconstructs an ordinary life: smells, rages, pleasures, griefs, friendships, loves, fears in the face of the century's crimes, and political temptations. Books, others' and his own, form the landscape of that existence.
The 2001 edition belongs to the Folio collection; the work originally appeared in 2000.
Aimed at readers of contemporary French literature interested in memory, introspection, and personal narratives.
François Nourissier was a French journalist and writer.
