«Siddhartha» is the drama film directed by Conrad Rooks (1972), starring Shashi Kapoor and Simi Garewal, on DVD.
Adaptation of the novel of the same name by Hermann Hesse, it narrates young Siddhartha's search for the meaning of life in traditional India. His path crosses asceticism, sensual pleasures and material opulence, until he understands that true knowledge is only achieved through inner experience, not through others' teachings.
Released in 1972 and winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival that year. It features cinematography by Sven Nykvist, is shot in Eastmancolor and Panavision, and includes English audio and Spanish subtitles in its DVD edition.
Recommended for those seeking classic auteur cinema based on literature; not suitable for children under 7.
