Businessman Graham Merrill's life is changed forever after he purchases Mij the otter in a pet shop. Giving up his job and flat in London, Graham moves to a cottage on the west coast of Scotland, where he works as a writer and strikes up a friendship with local doctor Mary MacKenzie. However, Graham's idyllic new lifestyle is threatened when it looks as though Mij's food supply is set to run out.
