May-Alice Culhane, a soap opera actress, becomes paralysed after a car accident and returns to the house in Louisiana where she spent her childhood. There she gives herself over to wine and bad temper, until she becomes an impossible patient for any nurse. The arrival of Chantelle, a caregiver with her own problems, changes the situation: she imposes her rehabilitation rules and forces May-Alice to face her new life.
Directed by John Sayles, it stars Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard. It was nominated for two Academy Awards (best actress and best original screenplay). The DVD runs 135 minutes.
